Susan "Sue" Simmons Obituary

HER STORY...

On January 7, 1965 a Queen was born, Susan Lynn Mitchell to Lawrence T. Mitchell Sr. and Dorothy Joan Taylor Mitchell in Michigan City, Indiana. Their hearts were filled with joy. Sue was also raised by a bonus father, Jerry Turner who preceded her in death.

Sue was born and raised in Michigan City and attended Michigan City Area Schools and had 1 year of college. She gladly accepted Christ at an early age. Serving God was a part of her daily worship.

Sue was fortunate to have married her “BEST FRIEND” and the love of her life Thomas Lee Simmons on April 30, 2005. They were “two peas in a pod”. They were inseparable, as a matter of fact when you see one you see the other. They had each other’s front, back, and sides. Sue didn’t play about her “Boaz” Thomas that the Lord blessed her with, and he didn’t play about her. They were the real life “Bonnie and Clyde”!!!

Sue was a PROUD Member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church for many years under the leadership of Dr. Rev. Stanley Mason. In 2023 when the Church merged, she became a proud member of Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor James E. Lane Jr. She served diligently as a choir member and choir director for many years. Sue was the songbird of Michigan City, singing for countless weddings, funerals, anniversaries, birthday parties, and more. Sue has blessed soooo many families down through the years with her anointed voice and encouraging words. No one will ever replace her, for she was one in a million.

Sue was presently employed with Coleman and Hicks Funeral Home as soloist for funeral services. She was named the “Crowning Queen” of Michigan City, singing "I Shall Wear a Crown when it’s all over" for several crowning ceremonies. Sue was also currently a director with Fly High Youth Services. She was formerly employed at Nipsco, the Boys and Girls club, and was in the housekeeping business, just to name a few. Although singing was her passion her main job and joy was serving God, then hanging out with her husband, children and grandchildren, and friends.

Susan Lynn Simmons was promoted from earth to glory on October 26, 2023. She was welcomed home by her Mother whom she missed dearly Dorothy Mitchell; her Father: Lawrence “Georgia Boy” Mitchell Sr.; Bonus Father: Jerry Turner; her Maternal and Paternal Grandparents; her Siblings: Debra Parker, Diane George, and Lawrence Jerome Mitchell; Nieces and Nephews: Calvin George Jr., Theresa George, and Austin George Sr.; a Special Niece: Brandy Mitchell; a very Special Cousin: Pastor Donald Taylor; along with a host of other family members and friends that awaited her arrival.

Sue never met a stranger in her life, and everyone that encountered her loved her, including her family whom she leaves to cherish: her Loving Husband whom she adored: Thomas Lee Simmons; her Children: David Wilson Jr., Krystal Mitchell, and Ashley Coleman; 5 Siblings: Louis (Nikki) Mitchell, Lawrence Mitchell, Pastor Sharon Hutching, Carlos A. Dean Sr., and Marvalene Mitchell; Special Aunts: Sandy (Deotis) Bureau, Geraldine Taylor, and Cora Lee Simmons; 29 Grandchildren: whom she cherished; her Nieces and Nephews: Denisha Surney, Briana Parker,  Alisha Lewis, James Parker, Jason Parker, Brittany Mitchell, Krystal Hargrove, Kristii Hargrove, Chasity Hutchings, Lawrence I. Dean, Deborah Dean, Constance Dean, Carlos Dean Jr., Shapiro Dean and Aaron Rivera; a God-Daughter: Chicanga Hewlett; her Best Friend: Brenda McCain; Special Friends: Mary Joyce Olds, and Patty Webb; along with a host of other cousins, relatives, Church family, her Coleman and Hicks family, her Fly High Youth family and friends.

One thing for sure, we will never ever find another Susan Lynn Simmons in this lifetime!!! As a matter of fact, there are several family members who loved her so much they all shared her middle name Lynn.

Susan in the Bible means “Lily in the Valley”, she definitely was bright as the morning star, and as beautiful as a Lily inside/out. Her voice, smile, love, laughter, and presence will be sorely missed for generations to come. When you think of her be reminded of this scripture.
