Quinton Fly Jr. Obituary

 

Quinton Fly Jr. affectionately known as “Q” was born October 24, 1966, to Grace Minley-Speight and late Quinton Fly Sr., in Michigan City, Indiana. Quinton’s journey of life concluded on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of warmth, kindness, compassion, courage, and faith. 

Early Life and Introduction to Basketball

Born with an adventurous spirit, bravery, courage and boundless energy, our beloved “Q” found the game of basketball at a young age. Beginning at 2nd grade, “Q”, along with Johnny Nichols, Tony Edwards, Brian Walker, Alonzo Rupert, and Rodney Richard spending countless hours shooting hoops at Elite Youth Center, then they continued playing basketball for Central Elementary School, Barker Jr. High School, Elston Sr. High school, and shooting hoops in the neighborhood parks, and school gyms forming a foundation for a lifelong love affair with the game. Quinton continued to play basketball for a Community College in Iowa, Texas and concluded as a guard for Indiana State University. Family, friends, and coachesquickly recognized not only remarkable talent, but also a spirit of perseverance, strength, courage, bravery, quickness, respect and generosity that set him apart from his peers.

Off the Court

Although basketball was his central passion, the legacy of Quinton extends well beyond athletic achievement. Quinton graduated from Elston Sr. High School in 1986 and graduated and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice at Indiana State University and later entering the United States Army and receiving an honorable discharge. Quinton later surrendered his life to the Lord and was baptized in Jesus name and filled with the Holy Spirit. Romans 1:16 “For I am not ashamed of the Gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes; first to the Jew, then to the Gentile. Quinton enjoyed sharing the Gospel with whom he encountered. Quinton had a passion for landscaping, mechanics, and beautifying yards. After a hard day’s work, you would find Quinton spending time with this Aunt Katrina and taking Aunt Katrina to the store, or spending time with his right-hand man, Rodney, as he mentored and taught him skills. Also, Quinton’s other passions included eating a cold bowl of cereal, honey buns, Oreo cookies, and Ms. Nichols Coconut and Carmelcakes she would occasionally bake for Quinton. 

Legacy

Quinton was the only son who was spoiled but a devoted and cherished family member. He is survived by his dedicated and devoted mother Grace Minley-Speight, who brought joy, laughter and love into his life, and his bonus father Oscar Speight. 

The joy of Quinton’s life was magnified and rich with love by his children Lataizah Tolbert-Fly, Laniyah Fly, Quinton Fly III, Qualean Fly, Lennox Fly and Amari Fly. Quinton was extremely proud of his children and all their accomplishments.

Also, Quinton was a beloved, and protective brother to his sisters Terri Byrd, Vanessa Obadina, and Leticia Fly.; Uncle Leroy Minley; Quinton’s best friend Rodney Richard, a special friends Oliver Jones and Gerald Campbell. A special sister Jackqueline Byrd, a God-son Kingston Mitchell, that he cherished, a furry friend, “Black Face”, and aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. 

Quinton was proceeded in death by father, Quinton Fly Sr., sister Rosetta Minley, Maternal grandparents, Jimmie Mae Tillman and Roy Minley, and Paternal Grandparents Minnie Fly and RT Fly.

A Celebration of life will be Saturday, June 28, 2025 11am at New Hope Baptist Church, 730 W. 6th St.,Michigan City, Indiana 46360 with Bishop Joe L. Bennett to do the Eulogy. Viewing will be 10am until time of service at the Church.
