Portia Ann Jarrett was born on January 29, 1955, to James and Irma Williams in Osceola, Arkansas.
Early in life, Portia moved to Michigan City, Indiana, where she was raised by her Uncle Mack and Aunt Mary Smith.
Portia graduated from Elston High School in [1973]. She was married to Leonard Hampton and to that union was born a daughter, Keisha Hampton. She later gave birth to her son, William Shaifier.
Portia was a member of New Hope Baptist Church, in Michigan City, Indiana, where she was baptized by her Pastor and cousin, The Rev. Robert T. Shipp. Portia enjoyed cooking, entertaining and laughing with her friends. She was the life of the party.
Portia gained her wings on April 18, 2022 at home. She was preceded in death by her parents: James and Irma Williams, her daughter: Takisha Hampton, her uncle Mack, and Aunt Mary Smith.
She is survived by her son: William Shaifier of Michigan City, Indiana; two sisters: Fannie (Calvin) Caywood of Downers Grove, Illinois; and Pearl Mason of Atlanta, Georgia; two granddaughters: Brandy (Melvin) Jordan of Atlanta, Georgia; and Zoey Washington of Michigan City, Indiana; two grandsons: Keyshann Hampton and Leonard Hampton, both of Michigan City, Indiana; god sister and special friend: Karen Taylor, of South Bend, Indiana; honorary grandmother: Lucille Webster, of Michigan City, Indiana; and her godchildren: Lucinda Taylor, of South Bend, Indiana; Delisha Taylor, of Indianapolis, Indiana; and Arthur Simpson of Florida, who were helpful in her care.
Portia’s presence, smile and loving memories will be greatly missed by all that knew her.
A Celebration of life is will take place Friday, April 29, 2022 at 1pm at Coleman and Hicks Chapel 101 S. Karwick Rd. Michigan City, Indiana 46360. Internment is private.
