A Blessed Woman Who Is A Gift To Mankind

Edith Marie Paige was born on June 9, 1939 in Little Rock Arkansas to the union of John Samuel Thomas and Doris Elizabeth Fowler, both who preceded her in death. Edith lost her birth mother Doris at a young age, but was Blessed to be raised by her bonus Mom Clara Thomas and developed a special connection with her Aunt Hazel Broadnax that she always treasured. Edith was the great matriarch of the family also known to many as “Ree Ree” “Grandma Edie” and “Mother Paige.”

Edith committed her life to raising her children as well as opening extending her love to help raise, nurture, and mentor, many children that came in and out of her life. Edith worked for over 20 years as a Psychiatric Tech at Beatty Memorial Hospital which would later become Westville Correctional Facility. She retired from Westville in 2005, but after just a few short years of retirement she returned to work at Meijer Grocery as a Store Greeter for another seven years. Edith always had a passion and love for family and education. These passions were the driving force that motivated her to self-study for and complete her General Education Degree at the age of 50. Edith was an avid supporter of African American Literature and Art. She hosted many gatherings in her home that gave African American Artists and writers opportunities to sell their work that they might not otherwise have. She volunteered countless hours with multiple charities (Susan G. Komen Foundation, American Cancer Society, Relay for Life, Donate Life, Transplant Games of America). Edith did all these things while still supporting her grandchildren’s many sporting events, school programs, volunteering on field trips, and hosting countless grandma’s girls’ night sleepovers.

Edith Loved the Lord and had a great Christian Journey and was a blessing to several ministries in her community. She was a longstanding member of Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church and came into her Christian Journey under the Leadership of Reverend Ernest Jones who has proceeded her in death. During her time at the Hill Mother Paige was an active member of the Usher Ministry, the Shepherd’s Keeper’s Ministry, the Soup Kitchen Ministry, the Mothers Mission Ministry, as well as one the many photographers and videographers of church events. At the time of her transition, she was a member of Zion Hill under the Leadership of Pastor James Lane Jr. where she was a beloved church Mother.

Mother Edith Paige was promoted from earth to glory on March 30, 2024 at Franciscan Health in Michigan City, Indiana. She was joined in Heaven by family that awaited her arrival, 1 Aunt: Hazel Broadnax; 2 Brothers: John S. Thomas Jr., Alfred C. Thomas; 1 Sister: Shirley Easley; 1 Brother-in-law: Randall (Randy) Banks; 1 Grandson: Delvin Mitchell; 1 Godson: Nate Murphy

Edith Leaves behind to cherish her loving memories 4 Children: John E. Carr, Hazel C. Mitchell, Doris E. Mitchell, Deborah Weems; 5 Sisters: Barbara D. Banks, Carolyn F. Peterson, Phyliss (Jimmy) Bolden, Deborah (Arthur) Bryant, Angela Mckee; 2 Brothers: Barney (Patricia) Joshua, Quinton Thomas; 13 Grandchildren: Tenay (Nick) Lee, Mishwanda Velasquez, Maurice Henderson, Danise Lewis, Duane Mitchell, Tameka Mitchell, JoAnn (Dwane) Banks, John Carr, Laquettia Smith, Gladys (Brad) Fields, Erica Bannister, Nakeishia (George) Allen, Napoleon Weems Jr.; 4 Godchildren: Tracy Mitchell-Blain, Sharonda (Michael) Lundgren, Marvin Morris Jr., Noah Murhpy, 45 Great-Grand Children, 20 Great-Great Grand Children as well as special cousins, special nieces and nephews and a magnitude of other family, friends and Church Family.

A Celebration of life will be Saturday, April 13, 2024 11am at Pleasant Hill MBC 717 E. 10th St. Michigan City, Indiana 46360 with Pastor James E. Lane Jr., to be Eulogist. Viewing will be 10am until time of service. Burial will Monday, April 15, 2024 at Swan Lake Memorial Gardens at 11am.
