Mother Alma Morris, 90, affectionately known to many as The Lemon Cake Lady, was born April 3, 1931, to the late Jake and Mary Jane Troutman in Macon Ga. She was the youngest of 11 children.
Mother Morris attended Hubbard High School in Macon GA. Accepting Christ early in life, she joined Smith Chapel Baptist Church in Musella,GA. There she was baptized in 1942, under the leadership of Rev R.C. Commers.
In 1960 she relocated to Michigan City IN joining Mount Moriah Baptist Church. Later, she found her church home as a member of Macedonia Baptist Church where she sang in the choir and served as a Mother for the rest of her days.
Mother Morris had a heart to serve God and all who crossed her path. Her heart was so big, she never met a stranger. With the same heart, she fed food to family and friends with weekly fish fry’s containing a slice of her legendary lemon cake. She applied the same love to her job, working at the VNA as a Caregiver until she retired at the age of 71.
Mother Morris loved the company of her family, always upholding the tradition of attending the annual Troutman Colbert Family Reunion. The word no was never in her vocabulary when it came to offering a helping hand, whenever you needed her she was there helping in any way she could.
