HIS STORY...

Melvin Metcalf was born on June 17, 1957 in Michigan City, Indiana to Willie Dortch and Willie Vern Smith. 

 He was born and raised in Michigan City. Melvin was number 4 born of his siblings. He attended Elston High School. Melvin accepted Christ at an early age. He enjoyed playing chess, watching football, buying cars, riding atv’s, watching court tv, online shopping, and he loved to work. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, family, and friends. Melvin worked at what is now Cleveland cliff steel mill for 47 years before retiring in 2018. He was also a licensed locksmith.

Melvin Metcalf went home to be with the Lord on October 27, 2024 at South Bend Memorial Hospital. He was preceded in death by his father: Willie C. Dortch, his grandmother: Addie McDonald, grandfather: Hosie Metcalf, BELOVED sister: Beryl Metcalf, his niece: Shavonda White, his brother: Carl Phillips, his father & mother-in-law: Thomas and Mary Clay, his brother in-law: Joel Clay, and his step-father: Johnny Smith, A special R.I.P. to Levon Payne, RT Parchman, and Arlima Parker.

He leaves to cherish his memories of his loving wife: Frances Metcalf, his mother: Willie Vern Smith, his children: Melvin C. Metcalf, Tammie Smith, and Fran'cois Metcalf, siblings: Vernon Metcalf, Gwen Metcalf, Danny and Liza Smith, Charles and Debra Sparkman, Darlene Metcalf-Taylor, Carl Smith, Michelle Metcalf, and Maryann Jarrett, all of Michigan City, Indiana; and Anna Bland of Memphis Tennessee; grandchildren: Zamire Metcalf, Fran'cois Chaz Metcalf, Isis Smith, Amari Smith, and Ry-Lynn Smith, In-laws: Robert Clay of Iuka, Mississippi; Donald and Heather Clay of Hobart Indiana; Margarat Henley of Alabama, nephews/pallbearers: Brian Metcalf, Dequan Metcalf, Quincy Metcalf-Brown, Marcus Metcalf, Demetrius Garrett, Terrance Metcalf, Demetrius Smith, Chris Smith, Cortez Samuels, Charles Sparkman Jr., Robert Clay Jr., Zachariah Clay, Zebulun Clay, nieces: Lashia Payton, Ericka Metcalf, LaKeisha Pender, Donnicka Young, Brandice Mitchell, Krystal Morgan, Dantasia Smith, Megan Adkins, Natalie Smith, Noelle Garrett, Donnesia Garrett, Denise Clay, Alexis Clay, Evie Clay, god children: Teresa Bland, Tracy Finley, Leslie Childs, Jennifer Taylor, Lashia Payton, Breeona Day, June Savage, Shawn Savage, Spencer Wright, Tyrone Gay, and Marcus Calvin.

Melvin's love, laughter, presence, and smile will be greatly missed by all that knew him. 

A Celebration of life will be Saturday, November 2, 2024 11am at Zion Hill Baptist Church 123 Helen St. Michigan City, Indiana 46360, with Bishop Joe Bennett to be Eulogist. Viewing will be 10am until time of service at the Church. Please continue to keep the family in your thoughts and prayers.
