Mary Harris Obituary

In Loving Memory of

Mary Ann Harris

The Obituary

Mary Ann Harris was born October 19, 1950, in Morgan Town, West Virginia, to Oscar Leon Harris and Armilla Dortch Harris.

When Mary Ann was young, she moved to Florence, Alabama. While in Florence, Armilla met and was united in marriage to Robert "Hambone" Jackson. Mary Ann came to Christ at an early age and was baptized at Petersville Missionary Baptist Church in Florence, Alabama. As a member, she enjoyed Sunday school and singing in the youth choir.

In 1970, Mary Ann met and united in marriage to Ray Vaughn of Florence. As their love grew, they started a family and soon moved to East St. Louis to begin their new lives. Although they were not married, Mary Ann and Ray Vaughn remained friends. She married James Portis in 1994, and although separated in 2012, they remained friends until his death. Mary Ann loved life and was never afraid of hard work. She retired from Liberty Mutual after a long career and would spend her free time visiting the casino or catching up with her grand and great-grandchildren.

Mary Ann made her heavenly transition after a brief illness on September 29, 2022. Her parents, Robert and Armilla Jackson, and her daughter Angela Vaughn preceded her in death.
