Mary Dawson

Sister Mary Elaine Fly Dawson was born on July 2, 1946 in Michigan City, Indiana to the late Judge and Grace (McBride) Fly.

She was married to Gene Dawson until their divorce and his passing.

She accepted the Lord under the leadership of Superintendent Romie Hatchett and Supervisor Mother Beulah Hatchett at Hatchett Temple Church of God in Christ in Michigan City, Indiana. Mary also faithfully served under the leadership of Bishop Charles Elijah Dowdell until his passing. While under Bishop Dowdell, she worked faithfully with the Purity class and with the Usher Board. Upon Bishop Dowdell’s passing, she accepted her present Pastor Edker Q. Hull leadership until her illness came. In her spare time, she enjoyed going to the apple orchard picking apples with her baby sister Pearl and Katie, going to any field picking collard, mustard, and turnip greens with YWCC, and she was a free hand artist and played a great game of dominoes. Her favorite meal was any entrée that had macaroni and cheese. She could also draw free hand with excellent illustrations and crochet hats, scarfs, and blankets.

Sister Mary Elaine Fly Dawson peacefully slipped from this life to eternity on Monday, December 5, 2022 at Addison Pointe Rehabilitation Center of Chesterton, Indiana. While there the health care staff said that she had a very peacefully sense of humor. They enjoyed dealing with her. She was proceeded in death by her five brothers: Clifton, James, William, Jerry, and Thomas and three sisters: Erma Jean, Barbara, and Pearl Grace Fly Sherman.

Sister Mary Elaine Fly Dawson leaves to cherish her memories with her brother-in-law: Deacon Vincent Sherman, a special niece: Mother Tonya Battle both of Michigan City, Indiana; special cousins: Mother Doris Ruffin of Detroit, Michigan; and Mother Anita Fly of Michigan City, Indiana; and the awesome members of Greater Powerhouse Church of God in Christ. She enjoyed a few special pets in her lifetime like: Ko-Ko Chanel Fly and Dallas Dowdell, Sr. along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.

A Celebration of life will take place on Monday, December 12, 2022 at Greater Powerhouse COGIC 428 N. Woodland Ave, Michigan City, Indiana 46360 at 11am.

Viewing will be at 10am until time of service at the Church, Burial will take place immediately after service at Swan Lake Memorial Gardens.
