Mary Butcher Obituary

Her Legacy...

Mother Mary Alice Butcher, affectionately known as Mary, took her final bow on December 26, 2024.

Born on May 15, 1931, in Birmingham, Alabama, to Minnie Smith and Henry Smith. Mary's life was a symphony of love, laughter, and the pursuit of a good recipe. Her contagious laughter and witty repartee made every gathering a celebration, and her compassionate heart made everyone she met feel cherished.

She made people feel loved. Mary's life was a tapestry woven with threads of empathy, resilience, and creativity. She moved to Michigan City, Indiana, where she made a loving home for her family for over 70 years. She spent her early years working as a housekeeper at Carson Pierre Scott before eventually retiring from Whirlpool in 2007. She was a former Sunday School Teacher. She also loved to make home-made ice cream and baked sweet potato pies. However, Mary's greatest job was being a mother and homemaker. She infused her home with love, warmth, and the delicious aroma of her cooking. Always one to embrace her creative side, Mary also enjoyed making her own clothes, adding another layer of uniqueness to her already vibrant personality. Mary's faith was the foundation of her life. Saved and sanctified, she believed in the power of love and the strength of family.

Mary Alice Butcher was promoted from Earth to Glory on December 26, 2025. She was preceded in death by her parents; maternal and paternal grandparents; one daughter: Patricia Evans, and six siblings.

She is survived by her son: Larry Butcher, and her daughter: Barbara Jean Fleming, both of Michigan City, Indiana along with a host of grandchildren that loved her tremendously and friends.

Her spirit, her love, and her benevolent laughter will continue to resonate in their hearts. Indeed, Mary's life was felt deeply and will be remembered fondly by all who were fortunate enough to know her.
