WHEN YOU HEAR OF MY HOMECOMING, DON’T WORRY ABOUT ME.
The legacy of…
Mother Mabell Elliott
Mabell affectionately called by those who loved her Mother, Granny, “Pretty Baby”, “Momma Bell”, and “Mary Bell” was born on July 3, 1944 in Greenwood, MS to the late Albert Chism and One Lee Thomas. On June 28, 1980 in Michigan City, IN she married Anthony “A.W.” Elliott IV who preceded her in death on March 9, 2010.
Mabell was raised by her maternal grandmother Mabel Jones. She got her education in LeFlore County School System in Greenwood, MS and Michigan City Area School System. Her work career includes being a Certified Nursing Assistant, Home Healthcare Giver, Factory Worker, and she even work worked as a judge at various poles during the elections.
Having professed Christ as her personal Lord and Savior at the tender age of 10. Mabell became an active member at her church in Greenwood, MS. At the age of fourteen Mabell relocated to Michigan City, IN with her Maternal Grandmother Mabel Jones. After her grandmother became ill and eventually passed away, Mabell lived with her Uncle/Godfather Sam Thomas for a time and then with her favorite Aunt Bernice “Aunt Bunny” Daniel until she became an adult.
As a young adult Mabell became a member of Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Pastor Cruz, and then late Pastor Ernest Jones and later Pastor Ronald Jones. During her tenure she was an active member on the Mother & Missions Board, Nurse’s Guild, The Soup Kitchen, just to name a few of her church auxiliaries.
Maebell was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star (OES) New Saint Rose Chapter 40.
In 1980 Mabell moved to Alton, IL and became a member of St Paul Missionary Baptist Church. In 1984 she returned to Michigan City, IN. Mabell loved to dress in her 5th Sunday outfits with the purse, hat, and shoe to match. She loved shopping and going out to dinner with family and friends, and cooking. In her younger years she loved going to bingo and card games. Her all-time favorite past-time was……YES, YOU GUESS IT, TALKING ON THE PHONE ALL TIMES OF DAY AND ALL NIGHT!!!!
If you ever had a chance to talk with her on the phone and asked her how she was doing you would hear her say this one phrase: “don’t ask grown folks how they’re doing” follow by “I’m fine and you”. She would have a saying for someone if she thought you were starring at something she was wearing and that would be “If you see more than God gave me then throw a hat at it”. Those were just a few, but Mabell had many little catch phrases that she would use and make us all laugh or scratch our heads.
After the death of her beloved husband Mabell moved to Nashville, TN to be closer to her son Minister Wesley “Chubby” Thomas. While there, she became a member of Tusculum Hill Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Paul Dunn.
