Jessie Jemison, Jr., also known as “Red”, was born in Chicago, Illinois, on May 20th, 1947, to the late Sarah Ann Goodwin of Michigan City, Indiana, and Jesse Jemison of Chicago, Illinois.
Jesse graduated from Elston Senior High School, where he was a star on the track team and ran the 4x100 meter relay. While making his name as a budding track star, he met his sweetheart Betty Moore and were married in 1968. After graduating from Elston Senior High School, Jesse began his lifelong journey as a young husband and father. His work career began at Josam Company as a forklift operator and ended with his retirement from Alpha Bakery in June 2012. Jesse enjoyed “all things” sports, including Notre Dame Football, and attending local high school sporting events. Another passion of Jesse’s was watching the sunset over Lake Michigan while doing his crossword puzzles.
Jesse departed this life on June 21, 2022, at his home in Michigan City, Indiana, reuniting him with his lovely bride of 44 years. Jesse was also preceded in death by his parents: Sarah Ann Goodwin and Jesse Jemison, other significant family members include his step-sister Lillie Florence Goodwin; aunts and uncles: Robert Lee, Paul, Oscar, James and Johnny B all of Michigan City, Indiana; Lizzie Mae Clarke, Johnanna Patterson, Lucille Kent all of California and Jessie Moore of Benton Harbor, Michigan.
A Celebration of life will take place on June 25, 2022 at 11am at Coleman & Hicks Chapel 101 N. Karwick Rd. Michigan City, Indiana 46360 with Pastor Dwayne Hurt to do Eulogy. Repast to follow at New Covenant Church Fellowship Hall 419 Grant St. Michigan City, Indiana.
Jesse and Betty’s union produced five beautiful children left to carry on their legacy. Their children are: Jesse L. and Ramona Jemison of Michigan City, Indiana; Archell and Stephen Carter of Norfolk, Virginia; Charlotte and Andre Harris, Sr. M.D. of Dayton, Ohio; Tasha and Ken Powell of Indianapolis, Indiana; and Kimberly Jemison of Michigan City, Indiana; Jesse shared his life with his best friend and sister Theola Wright of Michigan City, Indiana; step-sisters: Sonja Goodwin of Oak Park, Illinois; and Marsha Harris of Plainfield, Illinois; Brother-in-laws: Eddie and Faye Moore of Michigan City, Indiana; and Archillis and Rita Moore of Merrillville, Indiana; Nephews: Wendell McCollum of Merrillville, Indiana; and Rodney and Melissa McCollum of Avon, Indiana; Grandpa “Red” had 33 grand-children and great -grandchildren. Jesse also had many nieces, nephews, cousins, God-children and friends that love and will truly miss him.
