HIS STORY..
Jermel Calvin Thomas was born on April 23, 1976, in Michigan City, Indiana. He is the beloved son of Eddie Mae Thomas and Lawrence Calvin Campbell,
Jermel was a proud graduate of Elston High School, Class of 1994, where he was a standout basketball player. He was a 2-year Basketball Varsity Letterman winner, and a 2X Sectional Champ. Jermel averaged 14.3 points in his senior year. His exceptional talent on the court earned him collegiate recruitment. Jermel went on to Neosho Community College in Kansas where he played for 2 years and averaged 16.2 points and 7.3 rebounds, from 1994 to 1996. During his time there, he scored a total of 783 points, which remains the ranking college’s all-time career scoring list. His athletic journey continued at Western Kentucky University for the 1996-97 season, where he played as a junior forward, standing at 6’6”, averaging 8.0 points and 3.3 rebounds per game and 1 assist and 1 steal over 12 games. Jermel was honored on January 24, 2025 for his outstanding contribution to the Elston High School, Championship Basketball Teams in 1993 and 1994. His passion and dedication to sport brought pride to his hometown and inspired many young athletes.
Beyond basketball, Jermel was a lifelong learner, earning two associate degrees throughout his academic journey, which included studies at Neosho Community College, Western Kentucky University, and Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis. A hardworking and ambitious entrepreneur, Jermel was the proud owner of Lakeshore Home and Lawn, where he demonstrated his strong work ethic and commitment to providing for his family and community.
Jermel was a devout Muslim who dedicated his life to faith and service. He was actively involved in his local Muslim community, known as the Ummah, and worked closely with his local brotherhood to enrich and uplift those around him. His love for his community was evident through his volunteer efforts. He was always seeking ways to support those in need.
Above all, Jermel found his greatest joy in his children. He loved them deeply and was a devoted father, always present in their lives. He took immense pride in their accomplishments, encouraging them to pursue their dreams and instilling in them the values of hard work, kindness, and perseverance. His greatest wish was to see them succeed and live fulfilling lives, and he dedicated himself to ensuring their happiness and well-being.
Jermel Calvin Thomas transcended from this life to eternity on February 8, 2025. He was preceded him in death by both of his parents, his maternal grandparents: Panola Johnson and Eddie Potts, paternal grandparents: Katie and Levi Campbell.
A Celebration of life will be held 11am, at Coleman & Hicks Chapel 101 S. Karwick Rd. Michigan City, Indiana 46360 on Tuesday, February 18, 2025. Burial to follow at Swan Lake Cemetery.
Jermel is a devoted brother to Pamela V. Thomas, and a dedicated father to: Amaya G. Harris, Amare C. Thomas Bryelle J. Thomas, and Chase E. Hill, he also leaves behind his partners: Cynthia D. Johnson and Shawana C. Henderson, his 2 fur babies: Zahid, and Fatima, along with a host of family, Muslim Brethren and friends. He is also leaving behind a legacy of love, perseverance, and dedication to family, his community, and basketball.
Jermel and his sister Pamela shared a close bond throughout their lives. Growing up, they supported each other through every challenge and triumph. Pamela was a steadfast presence in Jermel’s life, celebrating his successes and offering encouragement at every step. Their connection was one of deep love and loyalty, and she will forever hold dear the memories they created together.
Jermel’s love laughter, smile, and presence will be sorely missed by all that knew him.
