Herbert Newkirk, affectionately known as “Herb”, was born on January 17, 1944, in Goldsboro, North Carolina to Hubert Newkirk Sr., and Cleo Newkirk.
He was an esteemed community leader and retired as an administrator of the Indiana Department of Corrections. Herb, a long-time resident of Michigan City, Indiana, dedicated his life to serving his community with a steadfast commitment to justice and rehabilitation. As Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, "The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well." Herb embodied this philosophy, leaving a lasting legacy in the hearts of those who knew him.
Herb’s career covered a spectrum of professions, from retail management in the 1970’s at establishments such as Walgreens and JC Penney, to a career in corrections that spanned over two decades. He began his career in 1981 as a Correctional Officer, soon promoted to Correctional Sergeant, and Administrative Assistant. In addition, he held positions of Director of Industries and Farms, Asst. Warden, and Warden. He worked at Indiana State Prison, Westville Correctional Facility and Maximum Control Complex. Additionally, he was chosen by Central Office to serve as Regional Director of 18 prisons. Duly noted, Herb was the first Black to hold those positions. His leadership was marked by his unwavering dedication and a strong sense of responsibility towards his community. Herb's commitment to the well-being of others extended beyond his professional life. He was a man of integrity, embodying compassion and understanding, qualities that endeared him to many. As Theodore Roosevelt once said, "People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care." Herb cared deeply, and it showed in his interaction with others.
Herb was known for his vivacious spirit, robust laughter, infectious enthusiasm for life and he had a gift for telling a great story. He had a natural ability to connect with people, fostering a sense of camaraderie and warmth wherever he went. He loved his family and friends dearly and was a pillar of strength and support. He strongly encouraged many staff, as well as individuals in the community, to pursue their educational, professional and personal goals.
