His Story…
Godfrey Byrd 71, of Dolomite, Alabama (formerly of Michigan City), departed this life on May 27, 2023 at Swedish hospital in Seattle, WA. He lived in Dolomite AL, and while travelling he made his transition.
Godfrey Byrd was born September 19, 1951.
Godfrey always considered himself highly blessed to be a part of two families that loved him. Maternal parents, the late Claude "Oklahoma" Hollins and Dorothy M. Hollins, and to have been adopted into a wonderful family of the late Rev. Avance Byrd Sr. and Sophie Byrd, all which are deceased along with his maternal siblings.
He was a 1970 graduate of Elston High School of Michigan City, IN. He was formally employed by Bethlehem steel and served as plant protection for many years. Godfrey later married Vicky Byrd (Allen) Phillips and from that union he had two beautiful daughters, Tameka Flores and Felicia Lewis, and was blessed to cherish and love 3 wonderful grandchildren; Azia Lewis, JaPrese Lewis and Darius Flores who he adored.
Godfrey had the opportunity to travel many places in life making Seattle Washington his home for over 30 years and was blessed to have another daughter whom he loved, Lori Hendon. Godfrey loved to fish and spend time with family and friends.
He leaves to cherish his memories three daughters: Tameka (late Aaron) Flores of Peoria, IL, Felicia (Dwayne) Lewis of Michigan City, IN and Lori Hendon of Phoenix, AZ. Two brothers: Avance Byrd Jr., of Tacoma, WA; and Aron Byrd of Shoreline, WA; Three sisters; Barbara Glover of Hopkinsville, KY, Henrietta (Theophilus) Sandidge of Merrillville, IN and Vernessa (Walter) Fry of Michigan City, IN. Godfrey had many maternal nieces and nephews whom he was very close to and loved, also a host of relatives and friends. Good friend and business associate, Edgar Patisse (Punch) of Seattle, WA and his loving fiancée Deidra Johnson of Dolomite, AL where he relocated. Godfrey was a stranger to none who knew him; a very loving and affectionate person, he will be very missed by all who knew him.
A Celebration of Life will be Friday, June 23, 2023 at 11am at Coleman and Hicks Chapel 101 S. Karwick Rd. Michigan City, Indiana 46360.
Godfrey will be sorely missed by all that knew him.
