Edward Curtis Hervey was the eldest son of the late Amos and Louella Brown Hervey. His life’s journey began on February 23, 1935, in Yalobusha County, Coffeeville, Mississippi. That journey ended on April 7, 2022, in LaPorte County, Michigan City, Indiana.
At the age of six (6), Edward started his elementary education at the Rocky Mountain M.B. Church School. It was the only school available at the time. After a period of time the Rocky Mountain Church School was consolidated with the Coffeeville Colored School in Coffeeville, Mississippi. Edward attended the Coffeeville Colored School throughout his middle and high school years.
In his youth Edward joined the Rocky Mountain M.B. Church and worshipped there with his family until moving to Michigan City, Indiana. Edward was an avid hunter who trained his younger brothers and sisters to hunt for wildlife and birds. During his spare time, he developed a love and talent for playing the harmonica and guitar from his late Uncle John Eddie Brown. His self-taught skill of working on automobiles was the result of studying Popular Mechanic Magazines given to him by his late Uncle Russel Brown. Edward could diagnose and repair any problem on any make and model automobile!
On April 17, 1956, Edward married Blanche Garner from Tillatoba, Mississippi. To this union five (5) children was born. Encouraged by his wife and in-laws, on Labor Day, September 3, 1961, Edward relocated his family to Michigan City, Indiana in hopes of better employment opportunities. On October 9, 1966, Blanche precedes him in death as a result of an automobile accident.
Edward was employed by Interstate Steele from 1961 to 1966 and Weil McClain from 1966 to his retirement after 32 years in 2000. On July 24, 1971, Edward married Annie Houston, of Michigan City, Indiana. He became the loving father of three (3) more wonderful children. After retiring, Edward started his own lawn care service and continued to work on cars until his health began to fail.
Remembering a quiet, well lived life are his eight (8) children: Donnell (Ruby) Garner, Linda Joyce (Danny) Nichols, Gloria Delores Hurt, Edward Charles (Mary) Hervey, Greylon Ricky (Sheila) Hervey, and Derick Houston all of Michigan City, Indiana, Lawrence (Loannie) Houston of Wyoming, Michigan, and Cynthia (Christopher) McKenzie of Calumet City, Illinois; his loving sister Grace (Willie) Hardy of Memphis, Tennessee; brother in-law Butler McLeod of Water Valley, Mississippi; his dear friend and caretaker Annie Hervey of Michigan City, Indiana; 21 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephew, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Edward was preceded in death by sisters: Rachel Duke, Edith McNeal, and Daliah McLeod; brothers: Prentiss Hervey and Elbert Hervey; and son in-law Johnny B. Hurt.
A Celebration of Life will take place on Monday, April 18, 2022 at Coleman and Hicks Chapel at 11am located at 101 S. Karwick Rd. Michigan City, Indiana 46360 with viewing from 10am until time of service. Pastor Danny Brown to do Eulogy. Burial to follow at Swan Lake Memorial Gardens.
Edwards presence, smile, warm heart and smile will be truly missed by all that knew him.
