Dr. Anthony Umolu M.D. Obituary

Dr. Anthony Umolu, 72, of Michigan City made a peaceful transition on July 2, 2021 at his home. He was born to Emmanuel and Agnes Umolu on March 23, 1949, in Abosa, Nigeria.

Prior to Dr. Umolu's arrival in the United States, he survived a brutal Civil War in Nigeria in which he fought valiantly for freedom on behalf of his oppressed people. He endured emotional tragedies of many lost lives and the physical pain and suffering due to multiple shrapnel wounds.

Prior to coming to the United States, he spent some time in London, England. In the United States he attended Ohio Dominican University in Columbus for his undergraduate studies. He obtained his medical degree from Albany Medical College in New York and did his residency in family medicine in Michigan before coming and starting his family medicine practice in Michigan City, Indiana, in 1980. Dr. Umolu practiced family medicine at Franklin Clinic for more than 25 years and emergency medicine at Saint Anthony’s Hospital. He retired from practice in 2015.

Dr. Umolu had an extraordinary zest for life, lived in the moment and warmed the hearts of the people who came in contact with him with his infectious smile and laughter. He cared deeply for the wellbeing of his patients and was a passionate advocate for them.

A celebration of life will take place on Thursday, July 8, 2021, at 6 p.m. at Coleman and Hicks Chapel 101 S. Karwick Rd., Michigan City, Indiana, 46360.

His loss is mourned by his friends, family, patients and the community.

He is survived by his sisters, Ifeoma Umolu Umerah, Eucharia Onwuzulike, Veronica Eneanya and Mary Amaechi; and 10 nephews and seven nieces, all from Obosi in Anambra State, Nigeria.

He is also survived by his former wife, Charlesetta, and her daughter, Sandy, of Atlanta, Georgia.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Emmanuel and Agnes Omolu; two brothers; one uncle; one aunt; and three cousins.

"Tony" will be missed by all who knew him.
