Dorothy J. Melton

Dorothy J. Melton, 77, of Michigan City made her heavenly transition on Tuesday, December 17, 2019, 12:05p.m. at Franciscan St. Anthony Health.

Funeral services will be 1:00pm, Saturday, December 28, 2019 at First Baptist Church of Lakeland with Pastor Howard Daniel to officiate. Viewing will be 12:00pm, Saturday at the church until the time of the service.

Dorothy was born December 28, 1941 in Indianola, Mississippi to the late George Eddie Hoskin and Doretha (Singleton) Porter.

She married Bennie Hargro in Gary, Indiana. She later met and married Robert Melton in Muskegon, Michigan. Dorothy enjoyed being with her family, playing cards, puzzles, dancing, and bowling.

In 1990, Dorothy relocated to Michigan City, Indiana. Dorothy was a member of First Baptist Church of Lakeland. She worked diligently with the kitchen committee, she was a member of the adult choir and she served on the mother's board.

Mother Melton leaves to cherish her fond memories, her children: Francine Hargro of Litchfield, Arizona, Felestine Smith and Bobbie Fleming both of Michigan City, Indiana, Joseph (Lori) Phillips of Detroit, Michigan, Robert Melton Jr., of Laughlin, Nevada Gerry Melton of Atlanta, Georgia, Gail (Keenan) Barr and Roderick (Sabrina) Melton, Darwin Melton all of Muskegon, Michigan and Marlon Melton of Kalamazoo, Michigan; two sisters, Bettie Harris, Sacramento, California and Ouida Porter of Phoenix, Arizona; two brothers, C.D. Longmire Jr. and Jerry Longmire both of Muskegon, Michigan; thirty-eight grandchildren, a host of great grandchildren; great-great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins and her First Baptist of Lakeland Church family.

She was preceded in death by, one daughter, Jamesannetta Hoskin; four brothers, James Hoskin, Conrad Longmire, Wardell Longmire and Richard Longmire;  one son-in-law, James A. Fleming.
