Deacon Lester Fleming Obituary

On a spring day in 1958, Albert Fleming, Sr. and his wife Arizona Ferrell Fleming welcomed a beautiful baby boy. Lester Darnell Fleming was born April 7, 1958 in Michigan City, Indiana. The dedicated father of four children transitioned from this life on Friday March 19, 2021.

Lester was educated in the Michigan City area school system.  He attended Niemann Elementary, Barker Junior High and he graduated from Rogers High School.  He was a good student and participated in multiple sports programs. His favorite sport was basketball in which he excelled along with his childhood friends; Laverne Briggs, Michael Tanner and Herman Wilson. After high school he pursued higher education. He attended Lincoln University an HBCU in Pennsylvania where he studied Electronic Technology. After attending college, he returned to Michigan City where he worked several years as a Highway Technician for The Indiana Department of Transportation and later for the Michigan City Street Department.  Lester wanted to use his technical skills and went on to work for AT&T until his retirement.

Lester realized his life was incomplete without God and was lead to Christ by his best friend Laverne Briggs.  Lester was a faithful member of Life Temple Church of God In Christ where he served as a Deacon. He worked diligently in numerous church auxiliaries and used his skills to helps construct Life Temple Church.

Lester spent his entire life in Michigan City, where he was well known and loved. Lester was a loving father, son, brother, uncle, cousin and friend. He was a natural comedian and had a gift for encouragement. He always had a way of making you laugh and loved to have a good time. He instilled hope into everyone that he encountered. Lester was kind, warm and generous. His big presence lit up every room that he entered. He enjoyed spending time with his family and also enjoyed good music, cooking and most of all rehabbing houses. Lester was a skill craftsman and businessman. He spent years rehabbing homes and his family lovingly referred to him as the “one man demolition crew”.
