Charles Turner Obituary

Charles Turner was born in Laconis, Arkansas on April 29, 1920 to Charlie Turner and Mary Turner.

Mr. Turner gave his life to Christ at an early age. After graduating High School Charles enlisted into the U.S. Army on November 27, 1942 and was honorably discharged. During his tenure in the Army, he served in World War II, obtained his certification for Sanitary Food Handling from the University of Houston Health Department in 1948 and a Diploma for cooking and baking in 1949. 

In 1956 Mr. Turner began employment with the Westville Correctional Center. In 1976 he was awarded 20 years of service with the Indiana Department of Mental Health while working in the Correctional Center. While working at Westville Correctional Center he obtained a secondary employment with Joy Manufacturing Company as a Security Guard until they went out of business. He was later employed at JoSam and Stanley Smith Security. He received employee of the month in 1994 from Stanley Smith Security. He completed the Voice of Hope Bible Studies Instruction Class.

.Mr. Turner was a loving family-oriented man. He would always welcome his family into his world. He always ensured that his family was taken care of. Although he adored his family, he sought time to engage in the activities that he loved such as fishing, playing his instruments with his band and gardening with his wife that he cherished Willie Mae preciously known as”Madea” . 

He later married Agnes Fry-Turner on March 7, 2010 in Michigan City, Indiana. She preceded him in death on March 16, 2016.

Charles departed this life on January 28, 2023 at Franciscan Health. He was preceded in death by His parents along with his maternal and paternal parents, his daughter, Callie Ashley, grandson, Jerry Roberts, former wife, Willie Mae Turner, and his best friend, Alvin Walker.

He leaves to cherish his unforgettable memories, one son James (Josephine) Turner of Rosharon, Tx; his 13 grandchildren whom he adored, Lynn Turner of South Bend, IN; Arthur Turner of MD; Cathy Rhodes of North Carolina; Vickie Rhodes, Nicki (Louis) Mitchell, Daryl Rhodes all of Michigan City, IN; James Turner of Honolulu, HA; Charles (Ada) Turner of Portage, IN; Anthony (Tessa) Turner of Lafayette, IN; Donna Turner of Michigan City, IN; James Turner II, of St. Louis, MO; Sophia Cloud and Boris Turner of Houston, TX; his step children, Walter (Vanessa) Fry and Corliss Cooper, and 23 great-grandkids along with a host of friends and other relatives.

A Celebration of Life will be Friday, February 3, 2023 at 12 noon at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church 717 E 10th St. Michigan City, Indiana 46360. Viewing will be 11am until time of service. Burial to follow at Swan Lake Memorial Gardens with military honors. 

Charles will be sorely missed by all that knew him.
