HIS STORY...
Benjamin Thomas Lewis, 66, of South Bend, Indiana, was called to rest at 1:50pm on Saturday, May 30, 2026, at Memorial Hospital. Born on March 11, 1960, Benjamin lived a life marked by hard work, deep faith, and love for those around him. He was a proud graduate of Elston High School, Class of 1978, where he formed values and friendships that stayed with him throughout his lifetime.
Benjamin was a skilled mechanic and proud owner of his own shop, where he dedicated himself to honest work and serving others with care. He took great pride in what he did and was known for his strong work ethic, dependable spirit, and his knowledge and love of cars. Through his hands and his heart, he touched many lives in his community.
Above all, Benjamin was a believer in God, an amazing father and devoted Christian whose faith guided his life and parenting style. Raised by parents Durmon and Lula Butler, who served faithfully as Pastor and First Lady of Pentecostal Temple COGIC, he carried that spiritual foundation with him throughout his life. His trust in God brought him strength, peace, and purpose, and that same faith was evident in the way he lived and loved his family and friends.
Benjamin will be remembered with great love for his kindness, his steady presence, and the warmth he shared so freely with others. He was also a protector of the women in his life, always offering strength, care, and unwavering support. He leaves behind a legacy of faith, hard work, perseverance, and compassion that will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his children, Bianca Rogers of Riverdale, Georgia, Beniqua Conner of South Bend, Indiana, and Malachi Lewis of Nashville, Tennessee; nine grandchildren, including two who held a very special place in his heart, A'yana Smith and Kiya Cotton; one great-grandson, Xzavian Smith; two sisters, Donna Lewis and Vicki (Thomas) Phillips, both of South Bend, Indiana; two brothers, Charles Lewis of Mishawaka, Indiana, and Bruce Lewis of Tacoma, Washington; his amazing Nashville, Tennessee family, whom he loved and adored tremendously; and a host of nieces, nephews and relatives whom he loved dearly.
He was preceded in death by his biological parents, James and Mae Emma Lewis; his eldest son, Aaron Maurice Smith; and three brothers, William Lewis, James Lewis and Kenneth Lewis.
Though he will be deeply missed, Benjamin’s memory will forever remain a blessing to his family, friends, and community.
“Sleep on and take your rest, we love you, but God loves you best.”
