Sylvester Jackson Obituary

Deacon Sylvester Jackson 83, of Michigan City, Indiana passed away peacefully surrounded by his family, on October 5, 2019.

Funeral services will be 11am, Saturday, October 12, 2019 at Macedonian Missionary Baptist Church 3007 Ohio Street, Michigan City. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery. Viewing will be 10am, Saturday, October 12, 2019 at the church until the time of service. 

Deacon Jackson was born on November 16, 1935 in Canton, MS to the late West Jackson and Mable Pry. He was known as "Jack".  


He received his education at Madison County Public School System. Jack accepted Christ at an early age and joined Humble Jerusalem Baptist Church in Canton, MS.
Jack saw a young woman across the room that he said, "made his heart miss a few beats". He asked Dorothy Luckett for her hand in marriage and in 1957 the united in holy matrimony. To this union five children were born.


Sylvester "Jack" worked at Frick Motor and Joy Manufacturer for 29 years as a drill operator. He also worked 10  years as a Maintenance Technician at the Michigan City School System. Jack was an entrepreneur, where he opened his shop, The Jack's Detail Shop, where he did business with several car dealerships within Michigan City. He had many loyal customers. Jack had a lawncare business. He worked diligently until he became ill.


Sylvester was an ordained deacon by the late Rev. BJ Ashley at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church. Deacon Jackson served faithfully as Treasurer, Deacon, Superintendent of Sunday School and Chairman of the Deacon Board. He sung with the male choir, he maintain the lawn and shovel the snow for the church. He was also a member of a Gospel Group that was called "King of Joy".

He is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy Jackson; two sons, Michael (Matt Gusick) Jackson of Chicago, IL and Paul Jackson Sr. of Michigan City, IN; two daughters,  Sandra Faye Jackson of Raleigh, NC and Deborah Jackson of Michigan City, IN; one special nephew that he raised Kenny Parks of Michigan City, IN and one special niece that he raised, Cathy (Dennis) Beard of Chesterton, IN; two brothers, Floyd (Bonnie) Jackson of Canton, MS and Eddie (Bridgette) Jackson of Jackson, MS and one sister, Celestine (Rev. Ernest) Clayton of Canton, MS; four brother-in-laws, Sherman Robert of Chicago, IL, Johnnie (Burlean) Luckett of Canton, MS, Charles (Lesley) Luckett of Gulfport, MS and Rev. Paul Luckett of Jackson, MS; one sister-in-law, Rosie Henry of Canton, MS; four grandchildren, Venesia Jackson, Lindsey Jackson, Paul Jackson Jr., and Biafra Ezukanma; one great granddaughter, Dareon Gardner; nieces, Linda, Diane, Vertis and Marilyn; one nephew, Rick and many friends.

His favorite hymn was "I Love the Lord, He Heard My Cry"

He is preceded in death by, one son, Terry O'Neil Jackson; two sisters, Emma Jean Brown and Eddie Mae Thomas; one brother, Minister Allen Ray George.
