Sonja S. Lenoir, age 52, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, December 17, 2017 at her home in Michigan City, Indiana.

A Memorial Service of Remembrance will be held Saturday, December 23, 2017 at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, 730 West 6th Street with Pastor Jacarra Williams to officiate. Family and friends visitation will be from 11:00am until start of service at 12:00pm.  There will be a private burial at a later date per family request.

She was a graduate of Northwestern High School, Detroit, Michigan class of 1983.  Sonja started her employment in 2000 at North Central Community Action Agencies., Inc. when it was under the leadership of Daniel Pishkur, she remain there until the time of her passing.  Sonja enjoyed working in the community and helping anyone that needed her help, she was a counselor without a degree.  She had her own special way of getting her point across to people when they did not want to hear what she had to say.  She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends; reading; mentoring and volunteering in the community and her church.  It was easy to see that she loved her church family at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church and they returned that same love to her without fail.

Sonja was dedicated to her family and friends, and was especially devoted to her daughter Shequitta, with whom she was extremely close.  Their relationship was rooted in love and bound by faith.  Sonja made sure that Shequitta had a strong foundation personally and spiritually to help her transition into the woman she is today.  Shequitta has a strong faith and an exceptional church family in Coon Rapids, Minnesota.  She is also a licensed Marriage & Family Therapist for the State of Minnesota that allows her to help other people, something she learned from her mother.  Sonja's earthly mission is complete.  She can rest in peace knowing the values and faith she instilled in Shequitta will carry her through this life.

She leaves to cherish her fond memories, one daughter Shequitta "Moody" Lenoir,  her parents, Barbara and J.W. Lenoir of Michigan City, Indiana; eight sisters, Mary Ann Lewis, Caroline (Marshall) Cowan, Sandra Lenoir, Marlene Lenoir, Felicia Rush, Diane (Tony) Taylor, Regina (Kenville) George and Melody Farmer; six brothers, Timothy (Lynette) Kelly, Mark (Allison) Dawson, Kenneth (Cookie) Gerron, Christopher (April) Rush, Derrick (Tricelle) Rush, Frederick (Kathy) Lenoir; special aunt and confidant Rosada Gardner, special friends Dana Meriweather, Jacqueline Jones, Felicia Johnson, Rebecca Tyler, Sheree Allison, Latonya Burt, Carmerlene "Pepper" Davis; Godson, Lloyd Farmer. Sonya is truly missed by her most loyal and much loved furry four legged spoiled baby "Simon", many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and co-workers.

Sonja was preceded in death by one sister, Jacqueline Denise Lenoir; father, John Rush; maternal grandparents Roosevelt and Mary Gardner and one brother-in-law Steve Farmer Sr..
