Allan Gillbert Whitlow, age 78, passed away on Nov. 19, 2017 in his bed at his home in Michigan City, Indiana.

A Twilight Service of Remembrance will be Friday, November 24, 2017 at Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church 629 East Michigan Boulevard from 4pm to 7pm. There will be a private memorial service at a later date per the family request.

Allan Gilbert Whitlow was born on Jan. 4, 1939 in Michigan City, Indiana to the late Louis and Mary Whitlow. He and Patricia married on August 26, 1961 in Michigan City, Indiana.

Allan was a city councilman, retired teacher, assistant principal, principal, assistant superintendent, superintendent, insurance agent and was also a former director of the Michigan City Boys and Girls Club chapter from 2001-2014.

Allan graduated from Saint Joseph’s College in 1961 and then received his Master’s degree in Arts from Michigan State in 1971.

Allan was an assistant coach on the Elston Red Devils boys’ basketball team that won the 1966 Indiana High School State Championship. In 2006, Allan was awarded the Humanitarian of the Year for his “generous contributions commitment of time, support and inspirations to the city of Michigan City and its citizens.”

Allan was an invaluable presence to Michigan City and his dedication, perseverance, passion, kindness and unpretentious attitude to everyone he encountered during his life will be missed dearly by an endless amount of people.

He was survived by his wife, Patricia A. Whitlow, their four children, Wayne Whitlow of Michigan City, Indiana, Weslynn (Greg) Waties of Indianapolis, Indiana, Wendy Whitlow of Fort Lauderdale, Florida and Warren (Amy) Whitlow of Fort Wayne, Indiana; his brother Richard (Lois) Whitlow of Sacramento, California  and Allan and Patricia’s grandchildren: Tyler of Missouri, Tré of Indianapolis, Michael of Michigan City, Dylan and Jasmine both Bluffton, Ohio.
