Nathan Pernell Jr., 87, affectionately called “June” departed this life on Dec. 9, 2017 at St. Margaret Hospital of Dyer, Indiana.

Funeral services will be noon, Saturday, Dec. 16, 2017 at Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church 717 East 10th St. with Elder John Jones to officiate burial will follow in Swan Lake Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Viewing will be 10 a.m., Saturday at the church until the time of service.

Nathan was born Aug. 8, 1930, in Vaiden, Mississippi, to the late Nathan Pernell Sr., and Leslie (Williams) McGee. On June 19, 1965, in Michigan City, Indiana, he married Hattie Ruth Wade; she departed this life on June 20, 2016.

June was raised in West, Mississippi and he attended Hudson School and Hudson Church. He later moved to Michigan City, Indiana. June worked many years at the U.S. Steel (National Steel) Midwest Plant until he retired. He loved to barbeque, maintaining his yard, spending time with his grandchildren and family.

He leaves to mourn his memories, his loving daughter, Burdette (Rodney) Emery of Michigan City, Indiana, one brother, Ernest Mitchell of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; special nephew that he raised, Johnny Burney of Atlanta, Georgia, special niece, Betty Jo Kelly of Covington, Georgia; two grandchildren, Carlos Adams of Johnson City, Tennessee, Eric Emery of Michigan City, Indiana, two great nephews Alexander Burney-Jones of Atlanta, Georgia and Jamar Burney of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; three great-grandchildren, Shaubrey Adams of Elwood, Indiana, Jaylynn Emery of Michigan City, Indiana and Kamliah Adams of Johnson City, Tennessee; two special cousins, Mary Brown and Dorothy Lewis ; special friends, Melvin Meriweather, Kenny Carter, George Robertson, Jo Willie McIntrye, Lester Norvell, John Agnew and Dave Ford and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

June was preceded in death by one sister, Thelma Pernell-Nalls, special cousin Ida Calvin and special friend, Wilbert Turner.
