Johnny Frank Mitchell, 64, Michigan City, went to be with the Lord on March 4, 2018. He passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home.
Funeral services will be 11am, Saturday at Christ Temple Apostolic Ministries 2308 Michigan Blvd with Bishop Joe L. Bennett to officiate. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be 10am Saturday at the church until the time of service.
Johnny was born Dec. 22, 1953 in Michigan City, Indiana to his loving parents, Major Fleming and Roosevelt “Rose” Mitchell who preceded him in death. In 2004, he married Annette Lewis.
Johnny received Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior early in life under the leadership of Bishop Joe L. Bennett at Christ Temple Apostolic Ministries. He was a God-fearing man.
Johnny was a talented electrician with plumbing and carpentry skills who could sketch and build a house from the ground up. From the most complicated task to the most routine job, Johnny could fix it, build it, wire it, design and/or “Johnny-rig” it if necessary. Johnny was a hard-working man.
After he graduated in 1973 from Elston Senior High School he furthered his education by working as a draftsman trainee at Allis-Chalmers. Johnny then secured a long and prosperous career as a Master Electrician at Bethlehem Steel for more than a decade. Johnny helped start the family’s electrical business in 2000 and was a mentor to his younger brothers with whom he worked tirelessly until he went to be with the Lord.
In the 70’s, Johnny rocked the biggest, baddest afro in the City; in the 80’s, his curls were natural - no Jheri curl required. The 90’s brought waves and he never showed up without his clothes showing out. Johnny was the best-dressed man in sight from matching hat to freshly polished shoes and perfectly creased pants… He was a fashionable man.
Johnny leaves many relatives to celebrate his life, laughter and cherish his memories: his wife, Annette Mitchell, Michigan City; he was a proud father of three wonderful sons: Deondrae Mitchell and Damon Mitchell (with Connie Wilkins) both of Michigan City and Johnny Mitchell, Jr. (with his first wife, Vickie Mitchell) California; special god son, Tremaine Byrd; three stepchildren, Brandy (Kenyatta) Parker, Tyrina Brooks and Patricia Stephen; five sisters and three brothers: Alice Faye(Apostle Robert) Jeffries of Newark, NJ; Carlotta (John) Adams of Michigan City, IN; Charles Williams of Michigan City, IN; Faye Lynn (Barton) White of Mishawaka, IN; Margaret(Ernest) Macon of Michigan City, IN; Janice (Rickey) Collins of Michigan City, IN; Gerald L. (Regina) Mitchell of Michigan City, IN; Garry L. (Debora) Mitchell of Michigan City, IN; twelve grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; three aunts, Lilly “Madear” Martin of San Jose, California, Berdia Lee Fleming of Chicago, IL and Annie Pearl Fleming of Michigan City and a host of his special nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, friends, and his Church family. He will be truly missed.
